Introduction

How are you all, folks? In this article, I'm going to cover how technological advancements are making the care and health of our best friends much more accessible and interactive. As a dog lover, I know how much our dogs mean to us. They're more than just pets, right? they're family. Hence, I always want to give them the best care possible, and technology has made this easier than ever. I'm going to share with you some of the innovative ways technology is being used with dogs, and how it has improved our bond with them.

I'm also going to disclose how I use technology with my dogs. Having quite a few, it's become a godsend, not just for me, but for the family. Living and working with dogs for most of my life, I've often been restricted by time, money, and a variety of other aspects, especially with mind games, indoor training at home due to space, etcetera. I don't know about you, but when my dogs get runny stools or go off their food, I can't stop worrying. More often than not in the past, a call or visit to the vet were the only things to put my mind at rest. Now, things are changing, fast. I for one, am happy about it. Let me tell you about how tech is advancing and how it could help you.

First-time dog owner?

For Top Tips to Strengthen Your Bond with Your Dog Using Technology, begin with the ordinary day rather than the perfect one. Look at the dog’s sleep, appetite, movement, recovery and ability to settle. Those details give you a more honest starting point than a single dramatic moment. In product reviews, small changes are often the useful ones: shorten the session, make the environment easier and write down what actually happened. That gives you evidence to work with and makes it far easier to explain the situation clearly if you need professional help.

Tech and Your Family Companion

Probably, if not the most important aspect of our dog's care is their health. Monitoring it is nigh-on impossible. Telling if your dog is feeling well or not, especially when you are away from home is so difficult. This is why I began using a smart collar on one of my dogs that I suspect is unwell. It can monitor their heart rate, body temperature, and respiration, and it even sends me alerts if there is something not quite right with my buddies. By tracking their movement and activity levels, I can see how much exercise they get and if they need more, or less. This way, I can keep an eye on their health and prevent any potential problems.

Gone are my days of constantly worrying, suffering panic attacks, and unnecessary vet bills. Just by spending a little and some reading on how to ensure best use, I have saved thousands already and it's only been about a year since I began using the tech. I'm old school, so when people have offered suggestions for help with this in the past, I always knew better (I know, STUPID!). In the last 5 years or so, I've opened my mind up to all possibilities, especially with the new technologies available.

Feeding Time at The Zoo!

Feeding my dogs. I know some of you will relate. Now, my dogs are all well-trained. From protection to obedience, they're all smart pooches. However, feeding time is like feeding a Zoo full. Don't get me wrong, they all sit and are patient, but it's a race to the end, and then the problems begin! The old game of musical bowls begins. I feed raw to mine for personal reasons. My reasons aren't necessarily correct, just what I prefer, and my dogs do too.

Having said all that, that's my experience with feeding a few dogs. I know most only have one or two dogs at the most. Also, there's always someone here at home with our dogs. I know a lot of people have to work full-time, and even then they could work late. Or they might want to go out for a while and worry about their dog getting hungry. That’s where automatic pet feeders can come in. These ingenious devices can serve up lunch while you're at work, or going out for the day and can't take them with you.

Having a camera and a speaker, you can see and talk to your pooch whenever you want. They love hearing a familiar voice and seeing your face. Giving you peace of mind, you'll love knowing that they're well-fed and happy. I know the automated feeders have been around for a while, especially in the feline domain, but the dog feeders don't seem to be as popular. I can't figure out why.

Tell me in the comments if you own one, and if you find it useful or if it's now collecting dust in storage. I'll be very interested to see the feedback on this...

Keeping Our Dogs Trained The Tech Way

Training my dogs has become much more informative and educational. For some of my dogs, I use a smart harness that helps me monitor their health and activity, as well as their behaviour and obedience. It detects their posture, and stress level, and even counts their barking, and gives me feedback on how to potentially improve their training. Having a GPS tracker, I can always find them if and when any of them get lost. This makes sure they're safe and not too far away.

Now, I need to be honest here. I'm not an advocate for harnesses. I believe they encourage dogs to pull, and this has a massive potential for injury, not just for the dog, but for the owner. I've always believed in training your dog to walk to heel. This takes away any potential safety concerns and shows responsibility. However, I know a lot of people prefer a harness, and I understand why. The sole reason I employ a harness is to use the feedback from the sensors if one of my mine is not well. It provides me with peace of mind.

Let's be honest, how often are we seeing people struggle with their dogs on a walk? The number is surging, especially since the pandemic's influence. Owning a dog is a huge commitment. People soon realise when they can't just "pop out" for a few hours, or go away for the weekend without incorporating plans for their new family member. Also, if you've noticed, the number of veterinary clinics has dramatically increased since the pandemic. New owners are struggling with tell-tale signs of illness, and injury, and just opt to take their dogs to the vet. Using these harnesses (once the dog is trained correctly) is a game-changer.

Game Time Activity

I've found that the most fun way to use technology with my dogs is through the massive offering of games and toys that have emerged on the market. It's introduced a variety of interactive games and toys designed just for dogs, that stimulate their minds and keep them entertained. For example, I have a ball that can be controlled by an app on my phone, and I play fetch with my dog remotely. It's mind-bending when I think about it. They love chasing the ball around, bringing it back to me, or playing with it between themselves. It's great to watch. Especially as I'm getting older! There are so many puzzles, treat dispensers, and other toys on the market now, that challenge their intelligence and reward them with treats.

Fetch, the oldest game in canine history. Yet no dog has ever been fed up with it, to be fair. With tech advancing at breathtaking speed, there are so many new games emerging that benefit dogs immensely. Now, you can invest in brain training games that also help with your dog's obedience and even howling problems. There are treat dispensers that improve your dog's IQ, reduce their anxiety, and stop any boredom-induced destructive behaviours.

More intelligent Dogs are better-behaved and more obedient.

I'm a massive advocate for mentally stimulating our dogs. In fact, I believe it's as crucial as physical stimulation. With dogs, you'll find that the more you walk them (Bulldogs are the exception to this rule, folks!), the further they want to go. All we're doing is conditioning them to do more. This is perfect, by the way, it's vital. What will they do with all that extra energy you've just conditioned into them? More often than not, they become destructive, through no fault of their own.

If you were to do the same for them mentally, you'll find they become calmer and less anxious. When dogs have too much energy, they can't do what we do and simply go out for a run, they have to release it somehow. By playing mentally stimulating games, or giving them activities that engage their minds, they tire out quicker, and for longer. This gives us as owners a sense of satisfaction and confidence knowing our dogs are well catered for, and it provides our friends with something to learn, and master, giving them a sense of calm. This all ends with a calmer, happier household, right?

Canine Nutrition Trackers

Turning my attention to nutrition, I have to be open here and admit I've never been the best with this. My dogs have always had a great variety of meals with veg often thrown in and healthy treats, but that's about it. A few years ago I met a lady who sat me down and educated me on the importance of ensuring correct nutrition through online sources and PDFs. Suddenly, I found myself looking at supplements that aid my dog's health, bones, muscles, breathing, and their coats. Tap on wood, I've not had one dog in the vets for the last 3 years, give or take. I'm not saying my dogs were tenants at the vet, but they were there often enough to notice.

Changing my mindset, and approach, I found that not only do my dogs look and seem happier and content, but providing them with beneficial nutrients is very satisfying. My dogs, consisting of 2 XL Bullies, 2 Rottweilers, and a Bulldog, means I have to cater for a variety of needs. By investing my time to educate myself, and a little bit of money, I have probably saved myself a few grand. Having such energetic dogs (except the Bulldog!), keeping them all occupied and calm is challenging. Along with the other technology I've already mentioned, this next piece of tech has really helped put the cherry on top for me, and the whole family as a whole really.

So, we use an app that helps us monitor and manage the pack's diet, based on their age, weight, breed, and activity level. It tells us how much food and water they need, what kind of food is best for them, and when to feed them. Having a barcode scanner is the best asset for us. It allows us to scan the food, supplements, and treats we buy, seeing if it's suitable for them. Now, we can make sure they're all getting the right nutrition, avoiding any allergies or health issues.

Tech Helps The Dog Talk!

This makes me feel self-conscious, but I always talk with my dogs, especially Rocco. I find myself wondering what he's thinking, or if there's something he wants to tell me. Am I the only one? Surely not... I hope! Can you imagine the difference our lives would be as dog owners if our best mates could really communicate with us? We've all seen the talking Husky telling its owner "I wuuuvve yoouuuuuu!" right? And the dubbed-over Labrador who has a full-blown conversation with its owner about the owner's day? Hillarious stuff. If only, eh...

Well, talking of which, technology has delivered. As it happens, technology is being used with dogs to improve their communication with us. It's allowed humans and dogs to communicate better, and help understand each other more. For example, did you know there is a dog on TikTok who uses smart buttons to form sentences, ask questions, and generally express her needs? Honest! She can say things like “I love you”, “play”, “outside”, and “water”. She expresses her emotions, like “happy”, “sad”, or “angry”. Incredible. It shows how smart and expressive dogs are, and how much they want to communicate with us, even though it is mainly only asking for stuff like food and toilet right now.

This is something that we, as a family are looking at. Having so many contacts in the canine domain, I am lucky enough to have insider information and news ahead of time. So, we're going to trial a new piece of tech with the purpose of feedback for the manufacturer. It still revolves around similar actions as above, but with more options, and infuses mental games at the same time. This excites me for the dogs, it's another area of their lives we can enhance. Yes, it's costly, none of this is free, but so far, I've seen savings in the longer term.

Somethings to Consider

All that being said, technology isn't always perfect, and it does have its drawbacks. While technology does benefit our pets, it also has unintentional consequences. For example, some household devices can emit high-frequency sounds that are inaudible to humans but can be distressing to dogs. These sounds often cause anxiety, stress, and even pain to our dogs, and most of us may not even notice. So, it's vital to research and consider the potential impacts of technology on our pets’ well-being. Always do everything you can to make sure you are not harming them unintentionally.

How? This is the next question. It's trial and error the majority of the time, unfortunately. Yet the likelihood of any of the devices mentioned causing physical harm through the dog's hearing or interactions is very low. It's like anything in life. If we're not sure, give it a test in a controlled manner. For instance, if you're purchasing a frequency emitter that addresses your dog's tendency to bark or howl, test it while you're with them several times. Make the required adjustments in real-time. This omits any of the potential dangers I've just mentioned.

My Conclusion and Parting Thoughts

Is technology the future for the canine world? Definitely not. Does it help it? For sure. I've owned, trained, and bred dogs for 27 years, and I have only scratched the surface of canines and their complexities. To think anyone knows it all is ignorant. However, I do know that the domain is evolving, from new breeds to new techniques, and technology is fast becoming a massive part of it. From collars and balls to apps and communication tools, it's a dynamic industry and there's no sign of it slowing.

I know a lot of you will be thinking some of these are gimmicks and will only end up thrown in the drawer. I did too, but now I feel different after using some tech for a while. These different tools have provided me and my dogs with tangible and positive impacts, from ensuring the dogs are fed better, to enhancing their day-to-day activities, I can honestly say now, that I'm sold on tech in the industry, and I'm excited about what's coming. As long as it's beneficial and accessible to owners, I don't see any negative.

To finish, I'll say that technology is playing a huge role in our dog's care, as some devices and apps make owning a dog more accessible. These advancements make it easier than ever to provide our dogs with the care and attention they need and deserve. It has also enhanced our interactions with our canine companions and improved our bond with them. Technology is truly becoming a positive thing, and I'm happy with how it has made my life with my dogs better.

Folks, thanks so much for taking the time to read this article, I hope you enjoyed it, and maybe you will even try some of these technologies with your own dogs. If you do, let us know in the comments or via email, it would be great to hear!
