What it is
A room-and-transition map, named-adult rota, visitor script, barrier audit and handover plan. It is designed to prevent unsupervised close contact rather than manage it after it occurs.
When to use it
Create it before 1 November 2026, before a child visits or moves in, before parties or work at home, and after any barrier or routine change.
Where it works best
Use it across the home, garden, vehicle, holiday property and any other private place where the dog and a child under 12 could come into close contact.
Why it was created
From 1 November 2026, leaving a child under 12 in close contact with an exempt dog in a private place without adult supervision becomes an exemption condition. Good practice should start now.

How to use it
- List every private place and transition where contact could occur.
- Choose fixed physical barriers and test latches at adult and child height.
- Name the adult responsible during each routine; never rely on a general assumption that someone is watching.
- Teach children simple rules without making them responsible for controlling the dog.
- Separate the dog before doors open, food is handled or excitement rises.
