Travelling, Boarding and Temporary Care With an Exempt XL Bully

How to plan lawful, lower-risk travel and temporary care for an exempt XL Bully, including address limits, transport, boarding and emergency arrangements.

Travelling, Boarding and Temporary Care With an Exempt XL Bully
Answer firstConfirm the destination rules before travel, keep the dog compliant in every public place and count temporary nights away from the registered address. Never assume a boarder or family member understands the exemption conditions.

The temporary-address limit

Official territory guidance permits an exempt dog to stay at another address for a maximum of 30 days in a 12-month period. Keep a written log of dates, address and responsible handler. A permanent move must be reported through the process for your territory.

Vehicle routine

Use a suitable restraint or secure crate and prevent escape when doors open. Put the lead on and check the muzzle before the dog leaves the vehicle into a public place. Carry water, spare equipment, certificate details, microchip number and veterinary contacts. Plan quiet stops with enough space.

Boarding, sitters and walkers

Ask providers in writing whether they are willing and able to care for an exempt dog. Check their insurance terms, local authority licensing where applicable, secure facilities and emergency procedures. Demonstrate the muzzle and lead routine. The certificate holder remains responsible for maintaining exemption conditions.

Hospital stays and emergencies

Name at least two adults aged 16 or over who can handle the dog safely in public. Give them written instructions and practise handovers before they are needed. Confirm who can access the property without creating an escape route and which veterinary clinic can receive the dog.

Travel between UK territories

Core duties are similar, but administration is not identical. Northern Ireland has an annual dog-licensing requirement, and permanent moves may involve different authorities. Contact the relevant government team or local council before a move or extended stay. For international travel, obtain specialist legal and transport advice well before booking.
