Barking Up The Right Tree
First-time dog owner? Tired of feeling overwhelmed by conflicting advice? Barking Up the Right Tree is your go-to guide for happy, healthy dog ownership. With over 30 years of experience, Conor Dwyer offers practical advice and expert insights to help you navigate the complexities of dog ownership.
Choosing Dog-Friendly Furniture
As a dog owner, I've learned that not all furniture can handle our pets' play, which can often be rough and unpredictable. It's key to pick pet-resistant furniture that can take daily wear and tear, from scratch marks to the occasional spilled water bowl.
Choosing materials like leather or tightly woven fabrics not only enhances durability but also ensures easy cleaning, allowing us to maintain a fresh and inviting atmosphere. This way, we can make our homes stylish and safe for dogs, creating a harmonious environment where both humans and pets can enjoy their space without constant worry about damage or mess.
Durable Materials
Choosing durable sofas means focusing on the material. Leather and tightly woven fabrics are top picks. They can stand up to scratches and accidents. Think of them as protecting your home from paws and claws.
Sturdy materials also mean your home stays clean longer, as they resist stains and damage more effectively than less durable alternatives. This is important when your dog is around, as pets can often leave behind fur, dirt, and other messes that can be challenging to manage.
With strong materials, you can enjoy greater peace of mind knowing that spills and accidents are less likely to compromise your living space.
Choosing furniture and finishes that can withstand the wear and tear of a playful canine companion not only helps maintain a tidy environment but also prolongs the lifespan of your home’s interiors, making it a smart longterm investment for pet owners.
Easy-to-Clean Fabrics
Easy-to-clean fabrics are a lifesaver for dog owners. Look for sofa covers and washable cushions that are easy to clean. It's like having extra protection for your furniture, especially when your furry friend brings in dirt, hair, or the occasional accident.
Not having to deal with stains is a big plus. It keeps your home smelling fresh, looking great, and welcoming. Imagine being able to simply toss your sofa covers in the washing machine without worrying about the wear and tear that might occur with traditional upholstery.
Additionally, these fabrics not only facilitate easy cleaning but also come in a variety of styles and colors. This means you can maintain your home’s aesthetic while ensuring practicality. Choosing durable materials can also extend the life of your furniture, making it a cost-effective solution in the long run.
Ultimately, the right choice of easy-to-clean fabrics can significantly enhance your comfort and peace of mind as a pet owner, allowing you to enjoy your time with your dog without the constant stress of potential messes.

Designing a Safe Space for Your Dog
Creating a safe space for our furry friends is more than just giving them love and cuddles; it's about making sure their environment is safe and free from dangers that could harm them.
This involves removing toxic plants, securing hazardous materials, and ensuring they have a comfortable resting area that fosters relaxation and wellbeing.
Furthermore, providing appropriate toys and mental stimulation is key to keeping their minds sharp and their spirits high. Regularly assessing their surroundings for potential safety hazards, such as loose wires or sharp objects, is also essential to prevent accidents.
Ultimately, a safe environment not only enhances their physical safety but also contributes significantly to their emotional health, allowing them to thrive and feel truly at home.
Secure the Perimeters
Securing the perimeters is a key step in puppy-proofing your home. Whether your dog is young and playful or older and curious, a sturdy fence can keep them safe. This means you won't have to worry about them chasing after squirrels or getting into trouble.
Avoid Dangerous Plants
When it comes to pet safety, the plants in your home and garden are crucial. Many common plants are toxic to dogs. Stay away from azaleas, daffodils, and tulips. Instead, choose safe plants like spider plants, Boston ferns, and some herbs. This way, your garden will be a safe place for your dog to explore. Do your research.
Electrical Safety Measures
Inside your home, electrical safety is also important. Dogs might be tempted to chew on loose electrical cords, which is a catastrophe if it happens. Make sure cords are out of reach or use cord protectors. Also, think about installing dog gates to block access to areas with lots of electrical equipment.

Pet-Friendly Flooring Options
Starting when you bring your first (or 2nd/3rd/4th) pup home, you need to consider they are still growing. This is the age when the pups bones and joints are easily damaged. Playing with our pups on slippery floors will see them bounding around like Bambi. As funny as this appears when they're gliding graciously into doors and cupboards, their bones and joints are being damaged.
Without being a Grinch, this ultimately only leads to the pup growing up in pain and needing veterinary intervention throughout their lives. This can be in the form of medications for arthritis, or other related ailments, or operations. All of this equals money and heartache, a lot of both.
"How long for, Conor?" I hear you ask. Definitely at least 12 months, but from experience, I would remain cautious until the pup has grown to 18 months old. This has been a safe number for me for many years and has seen little to no bone/joint damage on any of our dogs (personal or client).
Now, after 18 months old, we start looking at easy to clean, easy to wipe, and hard to damage flooring. For me, linoleum (lino) and tile are top picks. They're tough, easy to clean, and perfect for dog owners.
Imagine your dog coming in, covered in mud. Before you can say "sit," the floor is dirty. Lino and tile make cleaning up easy. They keep your home clean and tidy.
Carpet can quickly become a mess with pets, although, low-pile carpets are easier to clean. Lino and tile are still the best for keeping your floors looking good. Also, what you're not told, carpet hosts bacteria, pests, and more. Unless you're willing to either bleach your carpet or throw it out every time you dog catches fleas, parvovirus or more, then stay away.
Choose flooring that can handle a bit of wear and tear. Look for durability, easy maintenance, bleach-friendly and scratch-resistance. A floor that ticks these boxes will keep you and your bestie in good shape. This way, your home will stay happy and your dog will be wagging their tail.
Creating a Comfortable Resting Area
In my home, my dog's comfort is key. We start by making a space just for them, creating an inviting corner that not only caters to their needs but also reflects their personality. It's all about their resting area, ensuring it is cosy and warm, with soft bedding that hugs them during their naps.
Adding a few toys and blankets can enhance their sense of security, making the area feel personal and safe, while strategically placing it away from the hustle and bustle of daily activity allows them to relax undisturbed.
As much as we can create a place for them, they ultimately decide on it too. I know that all dogs enjoy being in a warm (excluding bigger dogs in hotter months), comfortable and safe space. A place they know is theirs, and no-one will bother them.
Why? 1. When they were born, they were one of many, snuggled up to and kept safe by mum, and kept warm and comfortable by their litter mates. 2. At the same time, they were alone in fighting for food and finding their own way around. It's almost a contradiction, but the psychology behind it has proven true, tested by time.
Dog crates are popular amongst dog owners, often for the wrong reasons. They use them for their own convenience, when they should be using them to support their dog's happiness, safety and comfort. You see, a crate should be seen as a dogs 'safe space,' a place where they want to be.
Of course, this is not something that you can suddenly throw your pups/dogs into without any upheaval. Unless, you do it the right way. This is something I talk about further in my other articles and mention in my handbook Barking up the Right Tree.
Picking the Right Dog Bed
Choosing the right dog bed is more than just "cute" or "adorable." Yes, orthopaedic dog beds do support ageing joints and prevent discomfort. But is it the right size? 1. for your dog, 2. for your dog's space? The bed's structure and material are crucial for comfort and durability, especially if you don't want to be buying a new one regularly.
For extra comfort, consider temperature-controlled beds. They adjust to keep your pet cosy all year. I posted an article this year where I reviewed an amazing brand of dog beds, which you can find here →Best Dog Bed For Arthritis
Temperature Control
Keeping a consistent temperature is vital for pets, as they rely on us to look after their comfort. Adjust your home's temperature to keep your dog comfortable throughout the year. This means ensuring that your pet is not shivering in winter or sweating excessively in summer, as both scenarios can lead to stress and discomfort.
Obviously, keep yourself in mind when doing so. Don't think you need to have the heating on all winter long, pushing yourself into debt over it. Be realistic and make conscious decisions without being blinkered to thinking your dog is all that matters. Too often, we take our love for our dogs too far, leaving us in difficulty, in turn, not being able to care for them correctly. It's certainly a vicious cycle you need to avoid.
Thinking about temperature control, creating cosy dog corners is also essential for your pet's well-being, and cost-effective. These designated areas not only shield pets from drafts but also offer a peaceful place for them to relax and unwind.
Such spaces can include soft bedding and blankets that cater to your dog's preferences, providing a sense of security. Furnishing these corners with insulated beds can greatly benefit your dog, even those with joint issues, ensuring that they keep adequate temperature and support during rest.
Furthermore, consider incorporating temperature-regulating materials in your dog's resting area, such as breathable fabrics or even heated mats during colder months. By focusing on these elements, you can create an ideal environment that supports the overall health and comfort of your pet, cost-effectively.
Storage Solutions for Dog Supplies
Being a pet parent means you'll gather LOTS of 'stuff.' From food and treats to toys and accessories, keeping things organised is key. It helps keep your home tidy and your dog happy. This is a rabbit hole that neither of us want to go down right now, so I'll keep it focused on priorities.
Tell me in the comments what you use for different storage types and how they help you out! The more we share the more we can help others, right?
Organising Food and Treats
Dog food storage is easier with airtight containers. They keep food fresh and pests away. Pick a spot in your pantry or kitchen for dog food. Use labels to make it easy to find what you need.
For treats, use small jars or bins. They're perfect for quick training sessions or treats. This keeps your home tidy and your dog happy.
Storing Toys and Accessories
Dogs love toys, and they can pile up fast. Toy bins help keep your space tidy. Choose sturdy bins that let your dog easily find their favourite toys.
For accessories like leashes and collars, use hooks or baskets. Entryways or mudrooms are great for this. It makes getting ready for walks easier.
Remember, 'a place for everything, and everything in its place'. It only takes a little planning for your home can be clutter-free. This makes life better for you and your dog.

Setting Up a Dog-Friendly Garden
Creating a garden that's both beautiful and safe for our furry friends is a dream for dog-lovers. We can enjoy a lovely outdoor space and let our pups play and explore safely. Let's explore how to make our gardens paw-some for dogs!
Choosing Dog-Safe Plants
I've already discussed what not to have in the garden, let me share some ideas of which plants you could have now. Dogs love to sniff and sometimes chew on things. So, it's important to choose pet-safe gardening plants. Lavender and rosemary are great because they smell lovely and are safe for dogs. Replace the toxic plants with these safe, aromatic ones to make your garden a safe haven for your pup.
Creating Play Areas
Turning part of your garden into an outdoor play space is fun for your pup. It helps them burn off energy and stay healthy. Think about adding a sandpit for digging (I saw this in one of my client's gardens years ago and immediately got home and had one dug the next day, game-changer!!), or a fetch area or mini agility course.
Focus on dog-friendly landscaping and your garden will be a joy for you and your pets.
Integrating Dog-Friendly Technology
Welcome to the smart future of dog care! Technology is changing how we care for our pets. Now, even when we're away, smart gadgets help us stay connected with our dogs. I covered some canine tech products earlier in the year and disclosed some of the gadgets we use at home. You can find the article here → How to use Technology to Build Stronger Bonds with Your Dog
Pet Cameras and Monitors
Interactive pet cameras have changed everything. They let you watch your dog and even play with them remotely. For example, the Furbo Dog Camera lets you see your dog live, talk to them, and even toss treats.
Automated Feeders and Water Dispensers
Automatic dog feeders make sure your dog eats on time. They work even when you're busy. The Wopet Automatic Pet Feeder lets you set when and how much your dog eats.
Automated water dispensers keep your dog hydrated. They make sure your dog always has fresh water. These gadgets make caring for your dog easier and more convenient.
Adding these smart gadgets to your home is a game-changer. They make sure your dog is cared for, even when you're not there. They're not just fun; they're effective and essential for a modern, pet-friendly home.
Managing Pet Odours in the Home
Oh, we love our furry friends but how we hate the smell they leave behind. Don't worry! I've got some great tips (and products) to keep your home smelling fresh and clean.
First, regular grooming is key. It keeps your pet clean and strengthens your bond. Don't forget to use paw wipes to keep the outdoors out of your home. Don't focus on the problem, focus on the solution!
Then, there are enzyme cleaners. These magic cleaners get rid of smells at their source. No more lingering odours!
For a fresher home, consider an air purifier made for pets. It removes dander and allergens, making your home feel like spring. Ozone generators are amazing at this, something I've had in my home for years now.
Don't forget the importance of quick clean-ups. Acting fast on spills and accidents keeps your home smelling great. With these quick tips, you can easily keep your home smelling nice. .

Decorating Tips for a Dog-Friendly Home
Creating a dog-friendly home that's stylish is possible! I've faced the challenge of keeping a chic space with a furry friend. Start with pet-friendly décor. Choose durable furniture and slipcovers that are easy to clean. They're your backup against unexpected fur storms.
Paint or wallpaper? Without being dictated to too much we need to find a compromise. For me, washable paint is always a winner but my wife, she loves printed wallpaper. The only good wallpaper I've found that works is expensive, while the paint can be inexpensive. So we set a budget and compromise!
Then, pick dog-safe ornaments. Avoid delicate ceramics or items that might be chewed. Instead, find sturdy decorations that can handle your pup's curiosity. This will prevent headaches and dangerous situations.
Adding stylish dog houses to your design can change your space. Match your dog's bed or crate with your home's colours. Turning sideboards into dog houses is a modern way to blend the two, along with converting under stairs spaces. This way, their area fits in with your decor, making everyone happy.
For the last touches, pick rugs and throws that are stylish and practical. Opt for washable and disinfectant friendly fabrics to keep your home clean despite muddy paws. A good home balances looks with function.
Training Areas within the Home
Without a doubt, the best and only area for training our dogs is outside. However, having special areas for indoor dog training is a big help. Training a dog can be as unpredictable as the British weather. So, it's smart to set aside specific spots in your home for this.
Designated Training Spaces
A quiet area for training helps your pup concentrate at the beginning. Think of a spare room or a quiet corner with few distractions. In my home, we call it the "pup pad". It helps your dog focus and know it's time to learn.
As the training improves and your dog is showing increased levels of response, the training can be moved to areas within the house with more distractions. This improves focus and response. Take it easy though, their still learning at the point so don't expect them to be like dogs you see online after 1 episode with "The World's Best Dog Trainer."
Proper Flooring for Training
The flooring in your training area is crucial. Choose easy-clean surfaces like vinyl or tile for quick clean-ups. These are practical and can handle your dog's energy. Avoid carpets to make clean-ups easier and encourage good habits. Keep my advice in mind from above re the flooring types relevant to your dogs age.

Creating a Dog-Friendly Entryway
Creating a pet entrance that meets your dog's needs can reduce dirt in your home, making cleaning easier for pet owners. It's about balancing practicality with style so your furry friend can enter and exit freely while keeping your space tidy.
Features like a durable mat to catch mud, easy-to-clean surfaces, and decorative touches that match your home's look can turn this small area into a useful and attractive entryway. Thoughtful design choices improve convenience and show your love for your pet, creating a welcoming space for both your dog and your guests.
Dog Ramps and Steps
Dog ramps or steps at the pet entrance are a significant improvement that greatly enhances the quality of life for our furry friends! They help all dogs, big or small, move easily from outside to inside via steps, eliminating any fear of slipping or falling. This is especially beneficial for older dogs or those with joint issues, ensuring they can comfortably navigate their environment.
Additionally, these ramps and steps not only make the transition smoother but also contribute to keeping your floors clean by stopping muddy paw prints in their tracks. By reducing the mess that comes from excited pups returning indoors after playtime, pet owners can spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying the company of their beloved pets.

Mudroom Setup
A mudroom with a dog washing station can make your pet entrance super clean, providing a designated space for managing the inevitable mess that comes with having a furry friend. A quick rinse or a full bath not only keeps your home tidy but also ensures that dirt, mud, and allergens stay outside where they belong.
With durable materials and thoughtful design, you can easily set up everything you need, from adjustable spray nozzles to ample storage for grooming supplies. This way, bath time can become a positive experience for both you and your dog. With a well-thought-out mudroom, welcoming your dog home is easy, transforming the potentially chaotic process into a seamless routine that strengthens your bond and enhances your pet's overall well-being.
